The development of an amperometric biosensor for L-lactate determination showing long-term stability is reported in this work. The biosensor is based on a thin-film gold electrochemical transducer and a three-dimensional membrane of polypyrrole entrapping lactate oxidase and horseradish peroxidase enzymes. It was applied to monitor the malolactic fermentation of three red wines, showing a good agreement with the standard colorimetric method.

Noncontact thermometric techniques with high-spatial resolution are essential for noninvasive off-chip characterization and heat management on Si surfaces. Here, the first ratiometric luminescent molecular thermometer implemented in a self-assembled polymer monolayer functionalized Si surface is reported.

A suspended p-type Si nanowire incorporating Si nanocrystal quantum dots has been used to form a single-hole transistor. Fabrication is based on focused Ga ion beam exposure and anisotropic wet etching. Electrical characteristics at 10K show Coulomb diamonds with charging energy ~27 meV, associated with a single dominant nanocrystal.

A novel suspended planar-array chips technology is described, which effectively allows molecular multiplexing using a single suspended chip to analyze extraordinarily small volumes. The suspended chips are fabricated by combining silicon-based technology and polymer-pen lithography, obtaining increased molecular pattern flexibility, and improving miniaturization and parallel production. The chip miniaturization is so dramatic that it permits the intracellular analysis of living cells.

For development of an impedimetric biosensor to quantify viable bacterial cells, this work defines the relationships between microbial growth and impedance changes associated with acidification of the culture medium. Performed experiments demonstrated the capacity of the method to detect E.coli concentrations in a range between 10x2 and 10x6 cfu/mL in milk in only 6 hours with 5–12% error margin.

Resistive switching conduction in Ni/HfO2/Si capacitors is studied at temperatures ranging from 77 to 473 K. A model for the low-resistance state (LRS) consistent with the experimental data is proposed. The LRS current–voltage curves show a maximum resistance, R0, at zero bias and a minimum value, R∞, at voltages close to reset, which indicates a departure from linearity. A three-parameter model for the I–V curves is reported and its temperature dependence analyzed.

In this work, the feasibility of using multi-material pSi-Cr-Au intracellular chips for multifunctional applications by characterizing their interactions with two different cell lines, one tumorigenic and one non-tumorigenic has been explored.

A new type of electrically controlled and fully integrated wax microvalve is described in this work. The valve is designed for multiple actuation and has a small footprint (< 0.5 mm2), fast response (< 0.3 s) and low energy consumption (< 35 mJ).

The aim of the present study was to combine the use of miniaturized and integrated impedimetric transducers and antimicrobial peptide AMPs to obtain biosensors with high sensitivity to monitor bacterial colonization to prevent implant-related infections.. Streptococcus sanguinis, which is one of the most prevalent strains in the onset of periodontal diseases, was used as a model of oral bacteria. To this end, a potent AMP derived from human lactoferrin was synthesized and covalently immobilized on interdigitated electrode arrays (IDEA). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were employed to optimize and characterize the method of immobilization.

A new solid contact ion selective electrode with intermediate conducting polymer (CP) layer formed by electropolymerization on a gold electrode of a bifunctional monomer, n-phenyl-ethylenediaminemethacrylamide (NPEDMA), which contains a methacrylamide group attached to aniline, is presented. Ion-selective membrane based on acrylated urethane polymer was shown to co-polymerize with the CP forming highly adhesive boundary. The designed ion-selective electrode was successfully used for determination of total calcium ion concentration in blood serum samples.
