The IMB-CNM has obtained the patent for a new method of selective deposit by shadow mask, based on a set of self-aligned metal masks, for the implementation of tracks and pads in power electronics. Power electronics is essential for the conversion of electric power in electronic devices and its implementation in batteries or power transistors in the field of renewable energy. It is a technology at the heart of solar panels and electric cars, which is why the community is looking for cheaper and simpler solutions to grow its potential.

The Power Devices and Systems group is the team in charge of this innovation, which opens new paths in power electronics while offering a cheap and easy to implement solution. It is carried out with standard deposition equipments and based on a set of masks that do not need photolithographic process or complex alignments. This technique is protected by patent.

XRE4S: a multidisciplinary ecosystem

The technology is gathered within the XRE4S portfolio. XRE4S is the R+D+I Network Energy for Society: a multidisciplinary and transversal ecosystem that gathers the expertise in the energy field of the main universities and research centers in Catalonia. The main goal is to promote the technology transfer and valorisation of energy technologies to industry and society.

Meet the Experts of the XRE4S

There are two groups involved in the XRE4S at IMB-CNM: MESSI and PDS. Researchers Luis Fonseca and Xavier Jordà have also participated in the series Meet the Experts, where they talk about the research lines of their respective groups.
