CSIC's Interdisciplinary Thematic Platforms

IMB-CNM is part of many of the CSIC's Interdisciplinary Thematic Platforms (PTIs), a finalist instrument of research and innovation, created to address multidisciplinary challenges of great scientific, economic, and social impact.

PTI+ Science and Digital Innovation

Its mission is to innovate in all areas of digital science and data lifecycle management, from planning, acquisition and processing to publication and preservation. This PTI has a clear orientation towards innovation in all those areas that generate an economic and social impact, particularly in areas such as health and well-being, agriculture, climate and safe society. Likewise, this platform wants to influence training in the digital world to facilitate daily tasks.

The platform groups its activities into 4 strategic areas and 2 transversal areas in which the different initiatives are integrated:

  • Sensors and integration of intelligent systems.
  • Data science.
  • Transversal software and tools.
  • Digital security.
  • Open science.
  • Innovation.

The researcher Cecilia Jiménez is one of the coordinators of the PTI+ as a whole (along with David Rodríguez, from the Physics Institute of Cantabria) and of the thematic area of ​​Sensors and Integration of Microsystems, which proposes development and innovation in all aspects related with the fusion of data and treatment of sensors and microsystems. In addition, the Micro and Nanofabrication Integrated Clean Room is offered as part of its infrastructure, with David Quirion as Deputy Technical Director of it.

PTI Global Health

Global Health PTI was launched to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the greatest challenges facing society in every country in the world. More than 330 research groups from different specialties collaborate in it to address the challenges posed by the coronavirus epidemic from the point of view of Science, with the aim of proposing solutions in the short, medium and, above all, long term.

One of the keys to this PTI is to have a global vision that allows all aspects of the pandemic to be linked: origin, prevention, disease, containment measures, treatment, social impact, and lastly, the need for communication with society, particularly in education. It also includes four cross-cutting working groups: innovation, sources of information, data and artificial intelligence applications, and regional coordination.

César Fernández, scientific researcher at the IMB-CNM, co-coordinates, together with Prof. M. Pilar Marco (IQAC-CSIC), the diagnostic work package and participates in the development of tests and prototypes. The work of the IMB-CNM research staff has focused on the implementation of a compact electrochemical platform for rapid multiplexed detection of virus and host markers in nasopharyngeal and serological swab samples, applicable at the patient's Point-of-Care.

PTI+ Tecnologías Cuánticas

The QTEP PTI+ is the quantum ecosystem created by the CSIC to advance in the field of quantum technologies, promoting training, research and innovation in a new generation of secure communication devices, computers and sensors based on quantum phenomena, such as interlacing or overlapping. The activity has been divided into the following lines of work:

  • Quantum communication.
  • Quantum computing.
  • Quantum theory.
  • Quantum detection.
  • Manufacturing for quantum technologies.

Francesc Perez-Murano coordinates the manufacturing pillar. QTEP participates in the Quantum Communications supplemental plan financed with Next Generation funds. In addition, investment is being made to promote the Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room of the IMB-CNM for the scalable manufacture of semiconductor, superconductor and photonic quantum devices, so that research groups and companies use its facilities. Other people from the IMB-CNM who participate in platform activities are Carlos Dominguez, in integrated photonics technology, and Gemma Rius, in quantum detection.

PTI Transición Energética

The TransEner PTI is born to promote the development of key technologies in the energy cycle to achieve a more affordable, reliable, competitive and sustainable energy system, both socially and environmentally. It integrates skills, technologies and CSIC knowledge to tackle projects with a high technological development and promote their rapid integration in the industrial sector.

The platform groups its activities into five strategic areas in which the most relevant initiatives or projects would be integrated:

  • Renewable Generation.
  • Efficient Energy Storage.
  • Industrial Decarbonization.
  • Hydrogen Technologies.
  • Electrification.
