IMB‑CNM hosts a PhD Workshop on Scientific Writing focused on purpose-driven research communication
Last March we celebrated a two‑day training led by Dr. Gavin Lucas for IMB‑CNM doctoral researchers with analytical, reader‑focused writing skills
The Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB‑CNM-CSIC) successfully organized the PhD Workshop Scientific Writing — Putting Why? before How?, a two‑day intensive training held on 25–26 March 2026 at the Aula Juan Fernández of IMB‑CNM. The workshop was designed specifically for 2nd and 3rd‑year PhD students, offering a structured approach to developing clearer, more impactful scientific manuscripts.
Led by Dr. Gavin Lucas, from TPM Science, an expert in scientific communication and research writing. The workshop emphasized moving beyond traditional formulaic structures to focus on the fundamental why behind each section of a scientific paper. Through interactive exercises, partner work, and real‑case discussions derived from participants’ own manuscripts, attendees learnt how to build stronger scientific arguments, enhance clarity, and adopt a reader‑centered writing perspective.
Over the sessions, participants explored narrative structure, expectation‑building, intuitive editing techniques, and common pitfalls in scientific language. They also examined how AI tools can complement the writing process, strengthening both efficiency and precision.
With an attendance limited to 16 participants, the workshop created a focused learning environment aligned with IMB‑CNM’s commitment to high‑quality doctoral training and scientific excellence. This initiative forms part of the institute’s broader efforts, supported under the Maria de Maeztu Unit of Excellence program, to enrich the research capabilities and communication skills of its early‑career scientists.
