The president of the CSIC, Eloísa del Pino, visited several CSIC centers in Catalonia last Monday and Tuesday, where she met with the management teams and staff to discuss the immediate needs and challenges of each center. She was accompanied by the Vice President of Organization and Institutional Relations, Carlos Closa, and the Institutional Delegate of the CSIC in Catalonia, Luis Calvo.

On Monday they visited the IMB-CNM and were received by the director, Luis Fonseca. First, they met with the management team and discussed the material needs of the institute; then they held a relaxed meeting with groups of representatives (postdoctoral and predoctoral research staff, labor representatives, etc.) and, lastly, they visited the exterior corridor of the Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room. Del Pino was able to see first-hand how this unique infrastructure works in southern Europe, the largest in Spain dedicated to research and development in semiconductor microfabrication.

On Monday, the delegation toured the CSIC centers on the Campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona: the Institute for Economic Analysis (IAE), the Institute for Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB), the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM ), the Institute for Research in Artificial Intelligence (IIIA) and the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC).

In Barcelona, the president visited the Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC-CSIC), the Institute for Environmental Diagnosis and Water Studies (IDAEA-CSIC); Geoscience Barcelona (GEO3BCN), the Institute for Biomedical Research of Barcelona (IIBB) and the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB).

Eloísa del Pino was appointed president of the CSIC last June. Among its objectives is the priority of reinforcing the role of the CSIC as an effective instrument of science policy and undertaking the necessary reforms immediately to strengthen the public science system. Among the first measures of her team is the implementation of the CSIC Simplifica plan to streamline the administrative procedures of the organization.

This is not the first time that she visits the institutes of Catalonia. She was already there last July, when she visited the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM) and met with all the directors of the centers.

The CSIC is present in Catalonia through 21 centers. It has advanced facilities and infrastructures, such as the IMB-CNM Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room, where chips are produced; the Automated X-ray Crystallography Platform, of the IBMB-CSIC; ICMAB's Nanoquim Platform, to produce nanostructured materials; and the ICMAB Soft Service laboratory, which is part of the NANBIOSIS Platform for the production of bio and nanomaterials.
