A seminar at a school, a micro-talk about a scientific career, a talk about the scarcity of microchips and two workshops on microelectronics are the activities that the IMB-CNM scheduled for the V European Researchers' Night in Catalonia, coordinated by the Associació Catalana de Comunicació Científica (ACCC). The initiatives open to the public reached their maximum capacity and more than 100 people in total came to learn a little more about the world of microelectronics.

The event took place in the week of September 30 throughout Catalonia with actions for all audiences and with the participation of public and private research centers, companies and non-profit entities. On behalf of the IMB-CNM, a total of 11 people managed the activities: a predoctoral researcher, six research staff and two technicians, as well as the two people from the scientific culture team. A total of six women and five men.

Avui ja és diferent: from the origin of nanoelectronics fins ahir

Jordi Sacristan went to the Escola Virolai in Barcelona to give a talk to 4th year ESO students and explain how a chip is designed and manufactured.

Els xips: invisible, practically indispensable sovints

Luis Fonseca, research professor at the CSIC and director of the IMB-CNM, went to the Barradas Auditorium in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat to give a talk on how a chip is manufactured and why there is scarcity and lack of supplies in the market. About 20 people came to the Rambla de Just Oliveras on Wednesday 28 for the session, which included three other scientific talks.

TICa't. Passa Paraula

On Wednesday the 28th in Vil·la Urània, a game on microelectronics and emerging technologies was held in an initiative coordinated by Gemma Rius, Consuelo Guardiola and Álvaro Calleja. Participants were able to learn more about microelectronic manufacturing processes and the technologies and materials that will change the future.

Science Slam

Laura Lefaix prepared a 7-minute micro-talk about what a research career entails and what the day-to-day life of a person doing a thesis consists of. The talk was part of the Science Slam, an initiative coordinated by the CSIC centers in Catalonia and the CSIC Delegation in Catalonia, which was held at the Center Esther Koplowitz in Barcelona in a packed room.

Journey to the fascinating world of the transistor!

The fascinating world of the transistor had a leading role on Friday night at the CosmoCaixa Science Museum in Barcelona, where 25 people gathered, including families, girls, boys and people interested in the world of microelectronics. Joan Marc Rafí, Miguel Zabala, Llibertat Abad, Patricia Rodrigo and Sabela Rey (from the Scientific Culture team) spent half an hour explaining what a transistor is, how it was invented and how it works. The public was able to touch silicon stones, transistors and chips, as well as make small electronic circuits with integrated transistors work. Organized within the framework of the project Un microxip molt gran, with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology - Ministry of Science and Innovation.
