The Mayor of Cerdanyola visits the Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room to know more about the surrounding research infrastructures

The Mayor of Cerdanyola del Vallès, Carlos Cordón, accompanied by his cabinet, visited the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona on the occasion of the award of the City of Innovation seal to Cerdanyola and the deployment of the PERTE Microelectronics and Semiconductors, which considers the Clean Room of the CSIC, hosted and managed by the IMB-CNM, as a strategic asset.

The Mayor of Cerdanyola del Vallès, Carlos Cordón, visited the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona accompanied by his cabinet, David González –Councilman for Relations with the UAB– and Alexandra Moreno –Head of Cabinet–. The visit took place on the occasion of the granting of the state seal of the City of Innovation to Cerdanyola, where the IMB-CNM is located, and the consideration of the Clean Room as a strategic asset in the PERTE Microelectronics and Semiconductors of the Government.

The CSIC's Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room, hosted and managed by the IMB-CNM, is the environment where different types of chips are developed under ultra-controlled conditions. It is the largest and most versatile in the country, and, therefore, the main node of the MicroNanoFabs network, which is considered a Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS) by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, hence its mention in the PERTE.

"It is a privilege for the city to have a center that, once again, places us at the head of leading research of international reference", said the mayor about the visit, in which he was able to wear a protective gown to enter the Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room.

Luis Fonseca, director of the IMB-CNM, was in charge of leading the visit and showing the institute's facilities. "Few cities the size of Cerdanyola can boast of having two facilities as unique at a state level as the Alba Synchrotron and our Clean Room. Today, when the chip crisis is on everyone's lips, we would like more than ever to explain our world citizens: we want to be prophets of microelectronics in our city", he valued.

City of Science and Innovation

The City of Science and Innovation seal is awarded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and recognizes the efforts of different locations throughout the State in research and development. The campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona is located in Cerdanyola, where the IMB-CNM and five other CSIC-owned centers are located, along with more research centers and technology-based companies.
