IMB-CNM welcomes the first fellow from the Visiting Young Researchers Program
PhD researcher Angela Viviana Alzate Garcia is the first one to begin her stay. The 2026 Visiting Young Researchers call will bring a total of six fellows, strengthening international talent attraction and high-quality collaboration across the institute’s strategic research axes
The IMB-CNM has completed the selection process for the María de Maeztu Visiting Young Researchers program, awarding six international candidates short-term research stays. Part of the María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence, the initiative offers early-career researchers the opportunity to join the institute’s advanced research environment in micro- and nanotechnology. Following the announcement last March, IMB-CNM now welcomes the first of the researchers to begin their stay.
The selected researchers are: Federico Malnati, Angela Viviana Alzate Garcia, Adei Abouhagger, Aicha Ibri, Arely Vazquez Jiménez, and Abril Abilene García Soriano. They will carry out stays of one to three months, engaging with IMB-CNM research groups across one of its four thematic axes: Micro and Nanosystems for Health and Environment; Energy and Mobility; Physics Frontiers and Civil Security; and Technology and Advanced Processes for Micro/Nanosystems. The fellowships, each supported with a €3,000 grant, aim to foster interdisciplinary learning and hands-on participation in cutting-edge research projects.
The call has yielded satisfactory results, attracting strong international interest and consolidating the institute’s strategy to promote scientific exchange, enhance training opportunities and broaden collaborations with external institutions worldwide. The program is a gateway for young scientists to gain experience in a technologically intensive research environment while contributing to the institute’s ongoing innovation efforts. IMB-CNM reinforces its commitment to nurturing early-career talent and strengthening global scientific networks within the field of micro- and nanotechnologies.
First visiting fellow begins her stay at IMB-CNM
Angela Viviana Alzate Garcia, from the Universidad de Caldas in Manizales (Colombia), is the first fellow to begin her stay this week within the Health and Environment axis. She joins the program Development of enzymatic and microbial biosensors through immobilization on silk membranes for heavy metal detection in wastewater, under the supervision of Xavier Muñoz-Berbel, from the Chemical Transducers Group.
The rest of the selected researchers will join the institute over the coming months, contributing to ongoing projects and expanding the impact of the María de Maeztu excellence program.
