The IMB-CNM offers 3 PhD-fellowship positions (max 4 years) to well-qualified and motivated graduate students, who wish to obtain a doctoral degree in one of the priority research areas of the institute.
The IMB-CNM offers 3 PhD-fellowship positions (max 4 years) to well-qualified and motivated graduate students, who wish to obtain a doctoral degree in one of the priority research areas of the institute: Micro and Nano systems for Health and Environment; Micro and Nano systems for Energy and Mobility; Micro and Nano systems for Physics Frontiers and Civil Security and Technology and Advanced Processes for Micro/nanosystems.
IMB-CNM belongs to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), located in the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) being part of its Campus of International Excellence. IMB-CNM is a technology-intensive research centre, focused on the use of micro- and nanotechnologies for the development of electronic devices, which houses the largest Integrated Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room in the country.
In this innovative environment, PhD students will have the opportunity to benefit from the IMB-CNM Network of Excellence, made up of partners from national and international research institutes and universities, as well as industrial partners in the field.
Eligibility criteria
- 1. The call is open to candidates of any nationality.
- 2. Candidates must have obtained a University Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in STEM studies (Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics) within the European Higher Education System (minimum 300 ECTS) or an equivalent University Degree that allows them to start a PhD thesis in Spain. Candidates who expect to be awarded with such a degree earlier than October 2025 are eligible to apply.
- 3. Candidates must have an excellent academic record and strong commitment to scientific and technological research. Previous research experience and academic awards will be considered.
- 4. Candidates must have a good knowledge of English language.

The applications should be presented in English.
The application needs to contain all of the necessary information for the initial stages of the selection process:
- 1. CV containing general information, education, scholarships, prizes and awards, research experience and scientific interests.
- 2. Academic transcripts (if the academic transcripts are not in Catalan, Spanish or English applicants should also attach a translation in one of the above-mentioned languages).
- 3. A letter of intent outlining their research interests, how their previous academic and work experience has prepared them for this programme and describe their career goals.
- 4. The candidates need to indicate name, affiliation and email address of two potential referees, to whom IMB-CNM will ask for supporting reference letters.
Selection process
The deadline for submission is May 20th 2025 at 11.59 pm. Submissions will be evaluated as received and there will not be option for amendment of the presented documents.
The process will consist of two evaluation phases:
- 1. Pre-selection: A first set of candidates will be pre-selected based on the candidates’ application, academic trajectory, motivation, letters of reference, and other scientific merits (e.g. international mobility, awards…).
- 2. Selection: During the first week of June 2025 such short-listed candidates will be invited for an individual remote interview with a multidisciplinary inter-axes committee to evaluate their academic and professional achievements, research interests and potential fit with the priority research lines.
The list of successful candidates will be published on this website in the second half of June 2025 and informed personally by e-mail before the list is published.
A process will ensue for preparing a contract with tentative incorporation not later than October 1st 2025.
