IMB-CNM and ICMAB strengthen collaboration in Bio Research at Bi(o)lateral Day

On March 6, 2025, the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) and the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM, CSIC) successfully hosted the Bi(o)lateral Day, a scientific event dedicated to fostering collaboration in bio research and scientific services between the two neighboring institutes. The event, held at the ICMAB Carles Miravitlles Conference Room, featured a full day of engaging presentations, dynamic discussions, and networking activities, highlighting the potential for joint research initiatives.

A day of science, collaboration and innovation

The Bi(o)lateral Day brought together over 85 participants, including researchers, technicians, and professionals from both institutes, with a strong focus on strengthening ties and exploring collaborative opportunities in the bio-field. The event combined formal presentations on bio research topics with roundtable discussions and interactive sessions, encouraging dialogue on shared research interests and available scientific resources. The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing satisfaction with the event and enthusiasm for future collaborations.

Anna Laromaine, one of the event organizers and bio-researcher at ICMAB, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in building lasting connections: “The combination of formal presentations and round tables has allowed for stronger and more informal interactions, which I truly believe will crystallize into new ideas, contacts, and collaborations. This Bi(o)lateral Day has helped bring together two CSIC centers that will be able to tackle critical challenges more efficiently.” She also highlighted the presence of young researchers: “It was nice to see many young attendees. Organizing activities specifically for early-stage researchers could further foster collaborations.”

Unlocking synergies: shared resources and facilities

One of the key topics of discussion was the shared use of scientific infrastructures, such as the bioservice, cleanroom facilities, and advanced characterization equipment available at both institutes. Mar Álvarez, another key organizer from IMB-CNM, noted: “Even if both institutes have similar equipment, the way they are used and the knowledge acquired can be quite different. Collaborating in characterization techniques can be highly beneficial. Optimizing access to high-cost, specialized equipment through a formal institutional collaboration framework could significantly enhance our research capabilities.”

Attendees recognized the importance of leveraging these resources and knowledge to boost efficiency and facilitate joint projects. As a starting point, co-supervision of PhD fellows was identified as a key mechanism to strengthen collaborations.

Roundtable discussion: A roadmap for future collaboration

The roundtable discussion, moderated by Laura Cabana, was described as “incredibly productive.” Cabana shared her thoughts on the session: “We explored some ideas and future plans. The conclusions defined a roadmap that will guide the next steps towards a fruitful collaboration.” This productive dialogue laid the foundation for future initiatives and strengthened the commitment to collaboration between the two institutes.

Looking ahead: Future joint initiatives

The enthusiasm and engagement during the event were evident throughout the day. While participation remained strong, organizers noted a slight decrease after lunch—something to consider for future editions. However, the high level of interest in maintaining active collaboration was a promising sign for both institutes.

To ensure momentum continues, participants proposed organizing smaller, topic-focused seminars and workshops to sustain the exchange of knowledge and ideas. Additionally, the next Bi(o)lateral Day is already in discussion for next year, reaffirming the commitment of both ICMAB and IMB-CNM to long-term scientific collaboration.

This event marked the beginning of a strengthened partnership between two neighboring CSIC institutes, demonstrating that working together can lead to more impactful research in biomaterials and microelectronics for biotechnology, health, and environmental applications. By continuing to build on this foundation, ICMAB and IMB-CNM aim to drive forward innovative scientific advancements in the years to come.

Thank you to all organizers and participants for this fantastic and successful event.
