In the past few months, the shortage in the supply of chips has become a headache for the markets. Despite their small size, these semiconductors are the main protagonists of most of the devices we use on a daily basis: laptops, activity bracelets, mobile phones, tablets, smart vehicles, electrical appliances of all kinds and even in the new technologies used in hospitals to take care of health.

In this area, the integrated photonics sector claims its own space. This discipline is developing optical microchips that are present in activity bracelets that monitor heart rate or assess sleep quality, in data storage servers, or even in autonomous driving vehicles that we will see in the not too distant future.

On March 14 and 15, the main players in the integrated photonics value chain in Spain will meet in Valencia for the fifth edition of the Photonic Integration Week (PIW), an event that has been held since 2017 (except last year, due to the pandemic), and which brings together the leading national experts in the sector together with a prestigious panel of international experts. On this occasion, it will focus on emphasizing the value chain of integrated photonics in Spain, going through all stages of the production cycle, from research and development to the end user.

"The objective of the next Spanish summit on integrated photonics is to continue creating synergies between all the actors in this value chain, and also to arouse the interest of the administrations so that Spain is a country of international reference in this industry," explains Jad Sabek, researcher of the Chemical Transducers Group of the IMB-CNM, about the meeting.

The IMB-CNM, through GTQ, actively collaborates in the organization of the event together with the Universitat del Paìs Valencià. The group will have a stand within the fair where they can exhibit the photonic technology they carry out.
