Cycle of conferences "The Silent Revolution"

Talks, conferences and round tables organized by the IMB-CNM on the occasion of the anniversary of the transistor between 2022 and 2023. With invited experts and with the participation of staff from the institute.

Experiences Working in California’s Silicon Valley of the 1980s

Invited lecture by Alexander A. Grillo (Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics, University of California Santa Cruz. Retired) on his experiences working in California’s Silicon Valley in the 1980s in two so-called “startup” companies and in one of the standard bearers, Intel Corporation. It is the only talk in English of the whole series, held online on November 21st, 2023.

Presente y futuro de la Micro y Nanoelectrónica

Talk by Spanish professor Tomás Palacios, director of the Microsystems Technology Laboratory at the MIT (US). Palacios reports on the latest advances in micro and nanoelectronics and the main limitations that compromise the improvement of these systems in the future. The talk presents a summary of the technologies and ideas that are currently being developed to extend the benefits of electronics and allow the development of a new generation of electronic systems, 1000 times more powerful than current ones. This will inaugurate a new era of electronics, much safer and more robust, and that will allow progress towards a more sustainable future and where computing and communications work in a coordinated manner to improve our world. Held in an online connection on June 1st at 4:00 p.m. (CET).

El 75 aniversario del Transistor Bipolar: La invención más importante del siglo XX

Lecture by professor Ignacio Mártil (Professor of Electronics at the Complutense University of Madrid and member of the Spanish Royal Physical Society) on "possibly the most important invention of the 20th century". Held on May 24th, 2022 at the Institute of Catalan Studies, in Barcelona.

De la ràdio del iaio a la Playstation 5: el transistor fa 75 anys

Outreach talk by Elisabet Prats, CIBER-BBN researcher in the Biomedical Applications Group of IMB-CNM, about the transistor invention and the social revolution it brought. The talk was organized by the Societat Catalana de Tecnologia (SCT-IEC) and IMB-CNM, introduced by Núria Salán and held at Institut d'Estudis Catalans on March 6th, 2024. This talk was done previously by Dr. Prats in different formats and durations at UAB, Festa de la Ciència and FAB Casa del Mig · Punt Multimèdia.

LA microelectrònica

Talk by Núria Salán (President of the Catalan Society of Technology and UPC-Terrassa Professor) on the invisible contribution of women, technicians and scientists to the history of microelectronics. Held on June 8, 2022 at the Institute of Catalan Studies, in Barcelona.
