Gonzalo Murillo, researcher at the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM-CSIC), received yesterday the National Research Award for Young People 'Ángela Ruiz Robles' in the area of Technology Transfer. The award, announced a few months ago, is given for the quality and originality of his scientific production and its transfer and dissemination.

Murillo specializes in the use of electromechanical nanogenerators, as well as environmental energy recovery and smart materials. The researcher is also the founder of the CSIC spin-off Energiot, which develops autonomous, miniaturized and intelligent devices as solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT).

The award ceremony of the National Research Awards 2023 was held yesterday, March 14, in Gandia. It was presided over by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain and counted with the intervention of the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, and the 20 award winners.

During the ceremony, the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities emphasized that "today is the day when our country celebrates its researchers, the day when all of Spain recognizes one of its most valuable resources: the talent of its citizens". For his part, King Felipe VI highlighted the "excellent work" of the award winners, which "not only contributes to the progress and welfare of society, but also to the strengthening of our country".

National Research Awards 2023

The National Research Awards 2023, endowed with 30,000 euros for each modality, are the most important awards in our country in the field of scientific research and distinguish those researchers in Spain who stand out for their career and international relevance in their respective areas. They also recognize the merit of young people -with a maximum age of 40 years- who have made relevant achievements in the early stages of their careers.

In this edition, José López Barneo, Francisco Javier Llorca, Felipe Criado Boado, Luis Enjuanes Sánchez, Josep Peñuelas Reixach, Ángel Rubio Secades, Jesús Jiménez Barbero, Javier García Martínez, Diego Córdoba Gazolaz and Manuel Arellano have been awarded with the ten modalities of the National Research Awards that distinguish research careers of excellence.

Miguel Ángel Mompeán García, Daniel García González, Idoia Murga Castro, Rodrigo Fernández Jiménez, Marta Martínez Sanz, Francisco Pelayo García de Arquer, Silvia Osuna Oliveras, Gonzalo Murillo Rodríguez, Xavier Ros Otón and Mónica Martínez Bravo received the National Research Awards for Young People.

This is the third time that the National Research Awards ceremony, since its creation in 1982, has been held outside Madrid. The two previous editions took place in Alicante (2022 edition) and Barcelona (2021 edition).
