The Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona, a CSIC center (IMB-CNM-CSIC) with almost forty years of experience, receives the María de Maeztu distinction, becoming part of the network of excellence of centers accredited by the State Research Agency (AEI). The recognition is awarded for six years and allocates stable funding for four years.

The AEI awards the distinctions within the State Program to Promote Scientific-Technical Research and its Transfer, State Subprogram for Institutional Strengthening, within the framework of the State R&D&I Plan 2021-2023. The current resolution, published last March, grants a total of 16 accreditations, of which 10 correspond to Severo Ochoa Centers of Excellence and 6 María de Maeztu Units of Excellence.

IMB-CNM-CSIC will receive direct support of 2,250,000 euros and will officially join the SOMMA Alliance. Other centers that have received the distinction for the first time are the Josep Carreras Leukemia Research Institute (IJC), the Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon (INMA) or the Centre de Recerca en Ciència i Enginyeria Multiescala de Barcelona (CCEM). Other centers such as the Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals (CREAF), the Institute of Science of Material of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) or the Instituto de Física Corpuscular (IFIC-CSIC-UV) have renewed their status.

Research and development of excellence

This distinction and the associated resources will allow the institute to exploit even better its unique technological capabilities and the expertise of its research staff in the field of micro and nanoelectronics, including developments in photonics and quantum, with applications in health, environment, energy, mobility, frontiers of physics and security, without neglecting increasingly important aspects such as attracting and training talent and strengthening its position in the international ecosystem.

IMB-CNM will continue the enhancement of its unique technological capabilities and excellent research and development in the field of micro and nanoelectronics, including developments in photonics and quantum, with application in health, environment, energy, mobility, frontiers of physics and security.
