An overview of IMB-CNM, the largest public microelectronics research and development centre in Spain.

Welcome

Welcome to the web page of the Barcelona Microelectronics Institute of the National Microelectronics Centre-CSIC.

Micro/Nano electronics, Photonics and Smart Systems have been identified by the European Commission as a fundamental part of the KETS-Key Enabling Technologies, which are the basis for the development and the improvement of the innovation capability of the European industry. These technologies have a high economic potential and the capability to contribute to solve the current societal challenges.

Electronic systems are part of our lives for several decades now. The evolution of microelectronics has enabled their introduction as an essential part of multiple products that can benefit any sector of the economy, by including properties such as a higher product intelligence or more sustainability.

The IMB-CNM aims to contribute to these goals with a high level set of researchers and facilities, unique in the South of Europe. We thank you for your interest in our institute and we hope that the R&D activities that we are doing can be of your interest.  Please feel free to contact us for any collaboration or visit in which you may be interested.

About IMB-CNM

The Barcelona Microelectronics Institute (IMB) is the Barcelona location of the National Microelectronics Center (CNM). It belongs to the Spanish Research Concil (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas - CSIC) since its foundation in 1985, together with the institutes in Madrid, (IMM-CSIC) and Seville (IMSE-CSIC).

The main activity of IMB-CNM is basic and applied research and development in micro- and nano-electronics based in silicon technology. Its mission is to improve the knowledge in these fields and to contribute to the implementation of solutions based in these technologies in industrial products. The R&D activities of IMB-CNM are complemented with training of researchers and with support and technology transfer to companies of the main industrial fields in its environment.

The research of IMB-CNM is not only on new technologies and devices; it also includes the design and integration of subsystems and complete smart systems. Over the years, the research activity in technologies, devices and integrated circuits based on the traditional Micro and Nanoelectronics (More Moore), has evolved into the fields of sensors, actuators, Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), microsystems and their integration into circuits and electronic systems to give them a greater functionality (More than Moore).

Micro and Nanoelectronics technologies are of horizontal nature, which allows their application to most industrial sectors. However, IMB-CNM has specialized mainly in their application in areas of great interest for both the domestic and international industrial sectors, such as health, environment (including food), the energy sector and mobility.

IMB-CNM is located in Bellaterra (Cerdanyola del Vallès), on the Campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), which is a privileged environment for both basic and applied/industrial research. It is a member of the Barcelona Nanotecnology Cluster-Bellaterra, jointly with the UAB itself, the materials research institute (ICMAB-CSIC) and the nanoscience and nanotechnology institute (ICN2). The IMB-CNM as part of CSIC is also a member of the UAB Research Parc (Parc de Recerca de la UAB, PRUAB).

IMB-CNM aims also to contribute to the dissemination of the applications and knowledge of Micro/Nanotechnologies. For this reason it participates in Technology Platforms and National Networks of Excellence and has established collaborative agreements with various universities and research centers, to which it offers not only cooperation in their R&D activities but also access to the technologies available in the "Integrated Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room". This infrastructure has been recognized by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness with the National label of large-scale infrastructure (Instalación Científica y Tecnológica Singular - ICTS).

Similarly, IMB-CNM has a clear international orientation and interest in establishing relationships with the industrial environment, which are evidenced by its participation in the management committees of the main European associations in the field: AENEAS-ENIAC, EPoSS, EURIPIDES, Photonics 21.

The staff of IMB-CNM is around 220 persons, of which about 65 are researchers and 60 Ph.D. students. The training of new research personnel by IMB-CNM researchers is an important activity. In the last few years they have supervised Ph.D. Thesis and have trained young post-doctoral researchers coming from the European countries, Latin America and the North of Africa.
