The Coordination Unit of CSIC Libraries has developed a remote access service based on the PAPI system developed by RedIris in order to access electronic information resources that require authorized access. Within the Library Network, this service allows access from anywhere with Internet connectivity to collections of electronic journals and databases licensed to CSIC and to the Intranet of the Libraries Network.
PAPI is a system that provides access to any type of electronic information through mechanisms of local identification (username and password validated against a mail server or a directory server, electronic systems, certificates, etc.) so access is independent of the IP address of the computer from which it is made. The information provider's server receives requests directly from the server on which PAPI is installed.
The PAPI system has been made available by RedIRIS CSIC and solves two major problems related to the access to collections of electronic journals:
The access of users belonging to joint-centres (CSIC + other intitutions) which use IP addresses not belonging to the CSIC communication network. This is the case for instance of Universities having joint institutes with CSIC.
The access of researchers from other places than their usual, either by temporal shifts, home work or while staying in other institutions.
Who can access electronic resources through PAPI?
Any CSIC researcher or worker at CSIC has access to these resources.
